Convergence
2024
This body of work explores the relationship between land, sky, and the suggestion of trees, hills, and distant mountains that converge between them. Painted in bold painterly gestures, colors and values blend and collide, the surfaces are scratched, and layers of paint are removed to convey the rustic spirit of nature. For Suokko, limiting his palette to a few colors eliminates the instinct to render scenes with romantic realism, allowing a fresh, clean, contemporary interpretation of the expansive landscape outside his studio walls.
“I am interested in pushing the boundaries between representation and abstraction through the imagined reduction of familiar spaces and forms on the canvas’s surface.”
