Artists often return to the same subject not to repeat themselves, but to rediscover. Like Picasso’s bulls, Monet’s haystacks, or Morandi’s bottles, the act of revisiting a single motif is a search for an essential truth.
In nature, repetition is never exact; every leaf on a maple tree follows the same pattern, yet no two are identical. This “quiet persistence” mirrors my own creative process. By focusing on a single subject—the cows grazing the hillside meadows of Vermont—I seek to find the infinite within the familiar.
Standing Cow
The Standing Cow began as an exploration of a single, grounded form. Reduced to a silhouette, the animal becomes an archetype of stillness.
The process became a dialogue between drawing, monotype, and oil paint on Arches paper. Each piece captures a “record of responsiveness.” Small adjustments—a runny edge, a flash of color, or a broken contour—shift the emotional temperature from solid and grounded to atmospheric and dissolving.
Grazing Cow
While the standing cow is declarative, the Grazing Cow is intimate. With its head lowered and spine arched in a gentle curve, the form represents a meditative state of repose.
These works focus on the moment of absorption. Often starting as monotypes, the edges are feathered and textures mottled, making the animal appear as if it is emerging from the ground itself. Within this reduced vocabulary, the series becomes a study of how stillness behaves.
Works on Paper
All works on paper are 8 x 10 inches mounted to wood, presented in a matte black metal floater frame, allowing the edges of the painting to remain visible.

Works on Canvas
The exploration continues with larger works on linen and canvas. In these pieces, the forms take on a more tactile presence through scratches, rubbings, and erasures. Here, the cows are no longer isolated; they are placed within emblematic landscapes of hills and sky—scenes existing somewhere between memory and imagination.
