Animals are not wildlife paintings or illustrations of particular species; they carry presence, felt more than portrayed. The birds hold a stillness that exists within movement: a pause in flight, a moment of balance before the next motion. The cows, deer, and other animals are both subject and symbol, remembered rather than rendered. They appear in the field or pasture and at the edge of the woods, painted the way they stay in the mind after they have gone.
