The imagery in this painting draws inspiration from my surroundings in Woodstock, Vermont, though it is not intended as a literal depiction. This ongoing series captures visual impressions experienced just beyond my studio doors—views from hiking trails on nearby hills and scenes encountered while walking through the highland meadows. I am particularly fascinated by atmospheric effects: the shifting moods of overcast gray days, the transient moments before or after rainfall, and the striking light that often emerges on the horizon where land meets sky.

Surface and texture play a crucial role in these works. Executed in oil on linen panels with a firm, resilient surface, I engage with the texture of the linen weave itself—rubbing, scraping, and deliberately revealing the underlying structure of the canvas. This tactile quality becomes an integral element, enhancing the visual narrative and connecting the viewer more intimately with the depicted environment.
