The imagery in this painting draws inspiration from my surroundings in Woodstock, Vermont, yet it is not intended as a literal depiction. This ongoing series captures the essence of visual experiences just beyond my studio doors—views from hiking trails weaving through the hills, and scenes encountered during walks across our highland meadows. I am particularly drawn to the atmospheric effects of weather: the somber mood of overcast gray days, the fleeting moments before or after a rainstorm, and the striking, luminous light that often graces the horizon where land meets sky.
Surface and texture play a vital role in these works. Painted in oil on linen panels with a firm, resilient surface, I engage with the texture of the canvas weave itself—rubbing, scraping, and deliberately exposing elements of the canvas’s underlying structure. This tactile approach enriches the visual narrative, adding depth and complexity to each painting.
