I approach still life painting from multiple perspectives—sometimes through direct observation of antique pottery arranged in my studio, other times through imagined compositions that arise from memory and intuition.
This large-format painting, executed on Belgian linen, is a study in grays. Two salt-glazed jugs stand as the central forms, their quiet weight anchoring the space. Each vessel carries its own character—distinct yet harmonious—embodying a quiet dialogue between presence and restraint.
The subdued palette draws from natural pigments: raw umber, unbleached whites, neutral grays, and a trace of soft blue. The composition’s simplicity invites a sense of calm balance, where light, tone, and form converge into quiet reflection. The painting is presented in an ebonized walnut floating frame by Larson Juhl, enhancing its understated elegance and grounding the work with subtle contrast.
