The imagery in this painting draws inspiration from the landscape surrounding my home in Woodstock, Vermont, though it is not a literal depiction. Rather, it reflects impressions gathered beyond my studio doors—views glimpsed from nearby trails, the soft contours of distant hills, and fleeting scenes encountered while walking through highland meadows.
I am especially drawn to the subtle weather effects of overcast days—the moments just before or after rain, when light shifts unexpectedly and the horizon brightens where land meets sky. These transitory moods, neither dramatic nor static, reveal a quiet tension that continues to draw me back to the landscape.
Surface and texture are essential to the work. Painted in oil on linen board, I engage directly with the weave of the fabric—rubbing, scraping, and layering to reveal its structure. These gestures create depth and atmosphere, allowing the material itself to echo the rhythms and textures of the natural world.
