This fourth painting in my exploration of cows as symbolic and expressive figures reimagines the same two forms that appear throughout the series. Across these works, I continue to seek a direct and intuitive way of painting—one that values simplicity, spontaneity, and the essential nature of form.
The compositions remain intentionally primitive, almost childlike in their rendering, evoking both innocence and quiet authority. I combine drawing with oil stick, monotype printing from cutout shapes, and traditional brushwork to create layered surfaces that balance immediacy with depth. These overlapping techniques invite chance and intention to coexist, producing textures that feel both discovered and remembered.
In this composition, two black cows outlined in coral-pink oil pastel stand quietly in a stylized pasture. One gazes outward while the other bends its head to graze. Above them, a single cloud hovers, acting as a silent third presence in the narrative. The positive and negative spaces of the painting hold equal visual weight, allowing the composition to oscillate between figuration and abstraction.
Together, these four cow paintings connect to my broader Animals series, bridging the intuitive freedom of the bird works with a continued interest in Nordic-inspired imagery—paintings grounded in instinct, memory, and the search for elemental balance.
