I approach still life painting from multiple perspectives—ranging from direct observation of objects arranged in my studio to imagined compositions that emerge from memory and intuition.
This large-format painting, executed on Belgian linen, is a study in tonal restraint and balance. Four antique Chinese ginger jars stand shoulder to shoulder in a single line, their forms quiet yet commanding within the composition. The generous field of negative space above them heightens their presence, allowing each vessel to breathe while contributing to a shared sense of calm.
The narrow openings of the jars suggest a sense of mystery—containers of silence and history. The palette is intentionally neutral and subdued, built from natural earth pigments and a range of soft grays. Presented in an ebonized walnut floating frame by Larson Juhl, the work achieves a refined simplicity that echoes the timeless elegance of its subject.
