This special bilingual edition of Sanyu: Prints by Rita Wong comprises two books. The Texts includes an introduction to the art of Sanyu and a critical essay situating his printmaking within the broader context of twentieth-century art. The Prints presents forty-two known drypoints, etchings, linocuts, and lithographs, each beautifully reproduced on Rives BFK 100% cotton paper—Sanyu’s preferred paper for many of his original prints—specially made in France for this limited edition of one hundred copies.
The design takes inspiration from Les poèmes de T’ao Ts’ien, a rare book published in Paris in 1930 that included three etchings by Sanyu. The Prints is wrapped in a translucent jacket, while both volumes are presented in a distinctive red linen cloth box. This finely crafted publication honors Sanyu (Chang Yu, 1895–1966), celebrated as one of the masters of modern Chinese art, and exemplifies a perfect balance between scholarly depth and artistic refinement.
I designed Sanyu: Catalogue Raisonné, Prints — Limited Edition Case Set for the Li Ching Cultural and Educational Foundation in Taipei. This bilingual publication, authored by Rita Wong, features two volumes—The Prints and The Texts—meticulously produced on Rives BFK paper and housed in a red linen box, reflecting Sanyu’s refined artistry and enduring legacy in modern Chinese art.
