Paintings at the Woodstock Inn

The Woodstock Foundation Collection

By Glenn Suokko

Foreword by Rachel French Weber

Paintings at the Woodstock Inn presents thirty-two works from the collection assembled under Laurance Rockefeller and continued by the Woodstock Foundation—paintings visitors pass daily in the lobby, pause at in the murals, and glance at along the dining rooms and halls without knowing who made them or why. As author and painter, I trace the Vermont landscape tradition behind them, from its roots in the Hudson River School to the artists working today who still find this corner of the world worth looking at closely. At the center stands Arthur Brickett Wilder—innkeeper for nearly sixty years, painter for every one of them—whose murals of Old Woodstock amount to a love letter in paint to the town he spent his life tending.
