Sanyu—the Chinese-French painter now central to the story of modern Chinese painting—spent much of his life unseen, and all of it unresolved. Recognition, when it comes, rarely comes on time.

Our online journal presents one artist at a time. Each issue is a portrait of a maker’s life and practice, paired with images of their work.

There is no single style running through these profiles, but there is a shared thread. The people featured here have built quiet, disciplined lives around their work, choosing craft over trend and steadiness over spectacle.

This online journal grew out of two books I wrote, A Quiet Success and Utility and Presence, and some of the makers profiled here will be familiar from those pages. But Makers also looks beyond them, to contemporary artists working today around the world—new names alongside familiar ones. Check back to read a new post each month.
