Presents over sixty selected paintings by Peter Brooke from over twenty-five years of work. Writer Alice Lyons takes the reader on a walk in the woods with Brooke, illustrating the physical and imaginative sources from which his paintings spring along the way. Essayist Grace-Yvette Gemmell provides insight into Brooke’s interpretation of the natural world as an instrument for painting the complex relationship between memory and experience. An interview with the artist in his studio by Mitchell Manacek and a photographic essay by Glenn Suokko provide insight into Brooke’s artistic history and creative process.

About Peter Brooke:

From his home studio in North Pomfret, Vermont, where he has worked for over twenty-five years, Peter Brooke paints dream-like scenes of the natural world based on memory and personal experience. In doing so, he pushes the boundaries of conventional landscape painting by capturing the feeling of being with the land, rather than merely representing it.

Peter Brooke received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Denison University, Granville, Ohio in 1983, and received his Master of Fine Arts from the Mount Royal School of Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1987. He was given his first solo exhibition at his undergraduate alma mater in 1989. In 1992, Gallery NAGA in Boston featured Peter for his first two solo exhibitions there, ushering in a twenty-five year relationship between the artist and the gallery. Throughout his career, Peter’s work has also been featured in the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; the David Findlay Jr. Gallery, New York; Dolan Maxwell, Philadelphia; The Dock, Carrick on Shannon, Ireland; the Fine Arts Center, University of Rhode Island; and the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College.

The Delaware State Arts Council awarded Peter with the 1995–96 Individual Artists Fellowship; in 1997, he was given a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson; in 2001, the Boston Globe selected his installation Any Tree, Any Rock, Any Hill at Gallery NAGA for its top-ten list of best art shows for the year; in 2011, American Artist Magazine included Peter on their “Eleven Artists to Watch” list; in 2013 he was awarded a residency at the Richard Estes Foundation in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Peter has been honored three times as a returning fellow at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ireland, and has twice been selected for Steven Zeritas’ New American Paintings: Northeast. His work resides in many private, public, and corporate collections, including Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and American Express, New York.

Peter Brooke is represented by Gallery NAGA in Boston; Dolan Maxwell in Philadelphia; and BigTown Gallery in Rochester, Vermont.


About the Contributors:

Alice Lyons is the author of three collections of poetry, most recently The Breadbasket of Europe (Veer Books, London, 2016). Her work often seeks to expand poetry into new contexts and media. Recipient of the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry and a Radcliffe Fellowship in Poetry and New Media at Harvard University, Lyons lives and works between the west of Ireland and Vermont.

Grace-Yvette Gemmell is an art and cultural historian, writer, and curator. She undertakes curatorial and publishing projects at museums and other cultural institutions while regularly contributing to arts, culture, and travel publications. Past and current work includes projects for Fodor’s Travel, Artsy, Hyperallergic, Artspace, Politico, Yale Art Gallery, and Google.

Mitchell Manacek is researcher, contributing writer, and copyeditor for Valise Print Artisans and Glenn Suokko Design. His recent work includes Peter France (Valise, Woodstock, 2018), English editing for the Archives of Modern Chinese Art (a catalogue raisonné series produced by The Li Ching Cultural and Educational Foundation), and copyediting for Dartmouth College’s Studio Art Exhibition Program artist-in-residence catalogue series. He lives and works in Burlington, Vermont.

Glenn Suokko is creative director and editor for Valise Print Artisans and an independent book designer, photographer, and writer. His recent books include Peter France (Valise, Woodstock, 2018); Shelburne Farms: House, Gardens, Farm, and Barns (Rizzoli, New York, 2017); and Simon Pearce: Design for Living (Rizzoli, New York, 2016). Glenn is also creative director for A New Pastoral, and online food and cooking resource and printed journal. He lives and works in Woodstock, Vermont.
